The Hidden Hand - E.D.E.N. Southworth

Those who know me can testify to the fact that I love words. I love to write them, to speak them, and to learn new ones. Written in 1859, The Hidden Hand contains a wealth of vocabulary from a century ago. E.D.E.N Southworth’s book was the first American novel to sell over a million copies.

This book is a Jane Austen on steroids with a much livelier heroine whose razor sharp wit keeps you shaking your head fondly (you just can’t help loving Capitola) and chuckling while you read. Through wit, a sprinkling of wisdom, and much common sense, Cap makes for a captivating and engaging character to take us upon a rollicking journey consisting of mystery, horror, romance, bad guys, good guys, duels, and good humored fun.

The Hidden Hand is a wonderful story of good triumphing over evil, and a poignant reminder that life usually throws us some pretty unwelcome surprises, and we have to choose how we will respond. Starting off with a dark stormy night, and a deep dark secret revealed by dying lips, the story then takes a drastic turn towards a roguish girl dressed up in boy’s clothes. There are so many twists and turns in this book, and the plot is so thick and full, that I wasn’t positive the story would reveal all the secrets to me by the end! However, in a satisfying twist of events all is set right, and the final secrets are revealed to a breathless audience.

While the book is engrossing, E.D.E.N Southworth’s story setups in the beginning of her books do not appeal to everyone. So for some the opening may be a little slow. But hold on, don’t put the book down. I promise you won’t want to miss what comes next. This book is really long, but entertaining enough to keep you engaged the whole way through. The book is filled with moral values and hope, begging the question, “Do we trust the Hidden Hand?” The one who orchestrates the events of our life? Southworth paints a vivid picture, reminding us that His hidden hand can be seen at work in the most difficult situations.
