John MacArthur throughout the years has encouraged countless Christians to deepen their understanding of God’s Word, and what it teaches. In his desire to know the truth and to convey it to others, he has taught several key things through his ministry, and out of those landmark teachings, has come a small trilogy of books: the Truth About series. In this installment he deals with the controversial and necessary truth of the Lordship of Christ in salvation.

Commonly called “lordship salvation” this subject has been debated again and again, leaving some scratching their heads in wonder about what the teaching actually is. MacArthur sets out in this book to explain it in a clear and concise manner. He walks us step by step through the impact of God’s sovereignty, our submission, the characteristics of holy living, and our assurance of salvation. MacArthur proves that the Christian life is rich and blessed, but by no means an easy life. It requires sacrifice and perseverance – it will cost you everything. But it is worth it all.

I have had the chance to read several of MacArthur’s other books on the subject, including his landmark bestseller The Gospel According to Jesus, and I can easily say that this book would line up well with his others of this sort. A short statement of the lordship position, this book makes the truths and implications of the lordship position accessible to anyone, but does not leave them in the shallow end of the pool. It is informative and readable at the same time, a rare and wonderful thing.

This is a good book for people who don’t like to read but like to learn, or those who are just starting to read theology. I was greatly impressed by the simple manner of the book, and it’s thoroughness. If I had to recommend a book to someone on the subject, this would be the one for sure. Unlike so many other writers, MacArthur shows a true love for truth and a desire to be as honest as he can with the Scriptures—qualities that have surely been brought along in his examination of this foundational subject. The book was a quick read, but a rich one—one I encourage you all to read, despite your position on the matter, simply so you can understand it better.
